The Walk

Updated: Dec 7, 2025

Description:

The Walk is a watercolor painting. It shows a quiet winter morning in front of an old red brick church. A light fog hangs in the air, softening the details of the scene and creating a calm, reflective mood. Snow has fallen overnight, and while it still covers the ground, it has begun to melt, leaving patches of wet pavement and softened edges along the sidewalk.

Two figures, a grandmother and her grandchild, walk side by side toward the church’s cemetery, which can be seen faintly through the fog. The gravestones appear as pale shapes in the distance, adding a sense of depth and quietness to the composition.

I used soft, cool colors to capture the winter atmosphere, mixing warm grays and cold blues to show the fog and melting snow. The warm red of the brick church stands out against the cooler background, guiding the viewer’s eye toward the building. The figures are small within the scene, emphasizing the scale of the church and the open space around them.

The watercolor technique includes smooth washes and gentle blending, which help create the foggy, peaceful feeling throughout the artwork.
