Artist's Statement
Ed Cepiel
Artist
My artwork focuses primarily on still life and landscape painting, with an emphasis on transforming the ordinary into something visually compelling. My paintings draw from everyday objects and familiar places, encouraging viewers to see beauty within the overlooked aspects of daily life.
My approach is rooted in quiet observation, intentionally silent and contemplative, inviting viewers to pause, look more closely, and engage their own imagination. Rather than relying on dramatic subject matter, I create meaning through restraint, allowing subtle relationships and visual harmony to guide the experience of the painting.
For me, each work functions as a form of self-portrait. My paintings reflect my personal interests, experiences, and evolving perspective over time. As my life changes, so too does the work, revealing a continuous and honest engagement with both the external world and my inner life.
I work primarily in watercolor and oil, drawn to the distinct qualities of each medium. Watercolor offers spontaneity and luminosity, while oil painting allows for a more tactile expression, revealing the presence of the artist’s hand. This balance between control and freedom is central to my process.
I earned my Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1985 and has maintained a lifelong commitment to painting. My practice is not driven by commercial concerns, but by an internal necessity. For me, making art is not a choice but an essential part of my identity.
